Road Trip!

I was brave this weekend. I took Adelyn to Kansas City for my friend Bonnie's baby shower. Alone! All week I went back and forth on if I should do it or not and on Friday I made the decision- yes, it is worth it!

It's a two and a half hour drive and Adelyn did very well the first two hours of it. Towards the end she started to get fussy and then she got REALLY fussy. I know it's totally ok for a baby to cry but when it is just you and her in the car and that is all you are hearing, it can really raise your blood pressure. But we made it and I'm so glad we did! Here are some photos from the shower.

Sara and Adelyn

I'm bummed this pictures is unfocused. But I thought it was worth posting anyway.

And for your viewing pleasure, a few more of Adelyn this week...And no, the rainbow pacifier clip is not supposed to be a gay-rights statement. I just thought it was really cute until Austin formed me that everyone probably was thinking that when they saw it.

On a different note, I am feeling more and more myself again. Looking back, I can say that the past two weeks have been some of the hardest weeks I can remember.  I'm still having kind of a hard time transitioning from full time work to now full time mom. I knew this would be hard for me in the beginning so I am simply walking through it and adjusting to this new stage in life. I know that as Adelyn gets older I'll be able to add more and more to my plate but right now life is simple. I want to embrace that and soak up these moments that I know will go by so fast.

Baby Blues

I know the baby blues are normal but today was hard. Well, the first part of the day was great. My sister and her fiance were in town, stayed the night, helped out and let Austin and I get some sleep. They left around noon and we took Adelyn to her doctors appointment. She's now officially 6 pounds 15 ounces! That is one ounce past her birth weight. So we were happy to find out our little gals is growing!

After that though, things went a bit downhill. Austin took Adelyn over to the grandparents house and I opted to come home to take a nap and have some alone time for the first time in almost two weeks. Well the alone time spiraled into a whirlwind of hormones, pity, sadness, and guilt for feeling all these things. I'm well aware that my body is chemically unbalanced right now but that doesn't make the emotions any less real. I've never felt like that before. I've never been one to struggle with depression and I think I am getting a small taste of what someone who is depressed goes though. I'm thankful it's a small taste and that this season will likely pass soon but it is still hard.

When I recognized my thoughts and emotions were spiraling downward I knew I needed to get into the Word. I needed some perspective. Some truth. Some hope. I haven't felt that intense need for the Word of God in a long time. I was thankful to be brought to such a humble place to so desperately need scripture to speak to my heart and mind. My time in the Word in addition to some much needed encouragement from Austin and close friends got me through this afternoon. Then as quickly as the blues came on, they left. I feel like myself again.

I keep thinking back to what a nurse told me in the hospital, "The baby blues are a very real thing..." I kinda blew her off thinking I would be able to navigate my emotions just fine. But I'm realizing that in this season, I really need truth. I need Jesus. I need my husband in a way I never have. I need my family and friends. I need to be vulnerable and real with people and not pretend everything is joyous because I have a newborn we wanted so badly. It's a hard stage but I know it's a season.

I write this post not to get attention or pity from others. I just want to be real about what the first few weeks are like post- baby and to help any expecting mommies out there an idea of what may come in addition to the joys of a new baby. I'm promise I'm doing ok so please don't worry about me (mom!). We are taking things one day at a time around here. Soaking up the precious moments with Adelyn and being a new family. Looking forward to seeing God give me more and more of a heart to be a mother and to falling more and more in love with her.

More Adelyn Updates

More updates. Again, in Cliff Notes version.

I have a new respect for single moms. Or moms with difficult babies. I wish I would have helped moms out more when I didn't have a baby of my own.

I went to bed at 7:45 last night. It was glorious.

This little gal has some hilarious facial expressions. She's also given us a lot more smiles lately. Haven't caught any on camera yet.

I feel like I can't get nothing done. I seriously started this post 3 days ago.

I didn't anticipate how much my back would hurt from bending over all the time.

I feel like I'm always nursing. Seriously, all the time!

Nursing has been one of the sources of greatest stress. Have had a few problems with it that I won't go into detail about but have been in touch with a fabulous lactation consultant and we are getting things worked out.

A few days ago I got slammed with some baby blues. It hasn't been too bad but there will be moments where I just feel so sad for no reason at all. It really helps me to get out of the house and be around people.

I never knew how enjoyable a trip to the mall could be. Austin and I went yesterday and I was so happy to be walking around Target.

Adelyn still hasn't figured out nights and days yet. Hoping that will come soon. She likes to be alert and awake from 2-5ish.

We went to church today. Adelyn made it through the whole service without even a squeal! She was in that coma- like sleep so she wasn't even phased by the music or loudness.

I think I said this in my last post but I can hardly ever answer the phone. I feel bad because I constantly miss calls from people I really want to talk to but I am rarely hands free right now and when I am, I just want to sit and zone out. But at the same time, my world has shrunk quite a bit so talking to people helps me step outside of baby land.

My in-laws are here today to help out. My father in-law is currently outside helping Austin mow and my mother in-law is currently holding Adelyn and keeping her content as I scramble around trying to get stuff done. It's nice to have someone to just baby hold for a while!

I need a nap.

Some Daddy-Daughter time.

Two cuties.

She likes to fall asleep with one arm up sometimes.

Sophie is worn out as well.

Tummy Time!

Here is a video of Tummy Time if you're interested. (Or click on the picture below)

Cutest outfit ever!

A onesie that Uncle Will bought Adelyn. Yes, it says, "That's how I roll"

Ready to go the mall!

I was sneaky and got a picture of Daddy pushing the stroller through the mall. He wasn't too excited about that.

Life with Adelyn thus far...

As you can imagine, I don't have a ton of time to write a thorough blog post about our first few days home. So I will update you about our world in a Cliff Notes version.

My mother is a saint. In fact both my parents are for helping out but my mom was here for 3 days and her presence was comforting, helpful, useful, encouraging, and so much more.

Every night Adelyn is up from about 1:30am to 5:30am. Needless to say, we are sleepy-eyed around here.

I got to have my first glass of red wine a few days ago. Well, half a glass. Can't have too much because I'm still am on pain killers. But it was oh-so-wonderful.

Austin got to experience some projectile poop last night. In fact, Adelyn is quite fond of pooping while Austin is changing her. It's funny to hear the conversations he has with her while it's happening.

We have constant conversations about pacifier use. Can't quite figure out how much to use it.

Trying to get out of the house at least once a day. Getting a little stir crazy but somehow the days fly by.

It's hard not to take pictures of everything.

It's amazing how I can just sit and stare at her and not get bored.

Loving visitors. It's a breath of fresh air.

I have a dresser AND closet full of clothes for this girl but only a few outfits actually fit right now.

Dogs are doing great with Adelyn. They seem to accepted her into our pack.

With our down time, we have started watching Modern Family. How have I not known about this show?? Stinking hilarious.

Adelyn is already smiling. We got quite a few smiles as I was saying her name to her tonight. She may have been passing gas or something but I'm convinced she was responding to the sound of my voice. :)

This blog post has taken me 12 hours to complete.

Here are the latest shots of the little lady...

I fall more in love with this little lady every day.

We're Home!

On Saturday we were informed that Adelyn had lost almost 10% of her birth weight. It's totally normal for babies to lose a little weight in the first few days but more than 10% can be a bit concerning. We were told that we would need to start supplementing with formula until she was able to get what she needed through breast feeding. We were also told that they weren't sure if we'd go home on Sunday as we had planned to or if the doctor would want to keep us a little longer to keep an eye on her weight. We really really wanted to go home on Sunday so when the doctor told us we could go we were pretty happy about it. So Sunday afternoon, with my parents' help, we packed up all of our goodies and headed home!

My parents are great. They went to the grocery store for us, got us stocked up on about everything we would need for a few weeks and then some. They also got KC Strips, red wine, and other delicious things for a celebration dinner that night. After 3 days of hospital food (YUCKY hospital food, I might add) I can't tell you how delicious this dinner was.

We weren't sure how the first night would go so we went to bed not sure what to expect. Adelyn made it through the first half the night like a champ. However, around the 2 am hour, she decided she didn't want to sleep or be alone anymore. From 2 am to when we got up (5am) Austin and I were tag teaming getting up, checking diapers, putting her pacifier in her mouth, feeding (well that was just me), and so on. Around 5 we kind of just gave up on sleeping. So needless to say, I'm one tired chick right now. Bummer is- I doubt this night will be that different. Or the next. Or the next... yikes. And of course she's now been sleeping peacefully ALL morning. I'm actually fighting to keep my eyes open as I write this!

I'm feeling OK physically. It's really hard not to do too much now that I'm home. I also am having a hard time keeping track of feeding schedules, her bowel movements, my medicines, and so on. Austin's been great about keeping me on track with all this stuff because I'm not doing so well...

So, overall, I'm glad we are home from the hospital but I also didn't know how good we had it while we were there. Here are some pictures from the last few days.

Adelyn Grace Conner

Meet Adelyn Grace Conner.

Born June 9, 2011 at 7:53 a.m.

This little gal has stolen my heart already. I could just stare at her all day long. I'm fascinated even by the smallest things she does. I just love her so much already!

Here's a peek into how it all went down.

The night before our scheduled C-Section, I hardly slept. I tried as best as I could but I honestly probably only got 3 hours of sleep. We headed into the hospital around 5:30 a.m. to get checked, prepped, and ready to go into surgery. I can't really explain how I felt that morning. It was a mix of readiness, anxiety, hope, fear, relief, and anticipation. It just seemed to be all happening without me being able to keep up emotionally. Here is a picture of me before the surgery. We kept laughing because my hat wouldn't stay on right. I eventually gave up and embraced the crookedness.

So we finally got herded into the O.R. where they prepped me while Austin waited outside. After the bottom 2/3 of my body went completely numb (a VERY strange sensation I might add), Austin was allowed in. They got started right away and within 10 minutes, we hear the doctor say, "I see a head full of hair...!" and then "look at those eye lashes!" Then we heard the first cry. It was beautiful. I cried right along with her when I heard it. The doctor held Adelyn over the drape that was blocking my view. Here is a picture of that moment...

After I got a good look at her, they took her across the room (again out of my sight) to clean her up and make sure everything was ok. I could hear her crying and screaming but it was such a joyful noise. After they got her cleaned up, they brought her back over to Austin and I and let us have a few moments with her before they took her to the nursery. Here are a few pictures of that.

Austin headed down to the nursery with Adelyn while I stayed in the O.R. to get closed up. I was prepared for this and it really wasn't too bad.  I think I was on such a high from seeing her and hearing her cry so much that it held me over until they brought her up to my room after I had recovered a litte.

While she was in the nursery with Austin, he got the chance to change her (and his!) first diaper. You can see 2 of the 11 family members watching from the outside. They told me he did a wonderful job.

After 30 minutes or so of being back in my room, they finally brought the little gal and put her in my arms. It was precious. One of the most precious moments of my life. I just couldn't take my eyes off of her.

At that point, we could only have 3 people in the room so our family had to take shifts to come in and visit. I actually liked that though. Between the lack of sleep the night before, the pain meds I was on, and the physical toll surgery takes, I was absolutely wiped. I even fell asleep right in the middle of Austin's grandparents visiting. Woops.

Above is what happened when Uncle Will (my brother) gets a few minutes with her. :)

Here is proud "Nana," Adelyn and I.

I'm writing this as we are in the beginning of our third day in the hospital. We have a ton more pictures since this first day but I'll post those when I have a little more time. Between visitors, doctors, eating, feeding, etc., it has seriously taken me 3 days to finish this one post!

A few common questions we get from people:

Is she feeding well?

YES. This was something I was worried about but from the very first feeding she has done really well. Almost too well. In fact we've had 4+ nurses tell us they are very impressed with her strong sucking reflexes AND the strength of her suck. It's almost laughable at how much she constantly wants to be sucking on anything. Her hand, her blanket, someones shoulder, pacifiers, etc. Even after she's got a full belly. So you can imagine the soreness factor from breast feeding. I won't go into that too much because I know it's a good problem to have but, wowza. It hurts. I'm hanging in there.

How are you feeling?

Physically- it's been up and down. As expected, the first day and especially the first night, I was hurting. It's funny though, even though I was so physically uncomfortable, I didn't mind. I just look at that little gal and kinda forget about it. I think we've finally figured out the dosage and type of pain killer I need so keeping ahead of the pain with the right stuff has made me a different woman. Austin is doing well. We are both pretty tired but I imagine that is going to be the norm for a while. At this moment, Austin is laying on the couch with baby girl on his chest. He just told me, "I seriously could do this all day." It's so precious to see him as a daddy.

Who does she look like?

Honestly, we don't know. Both Austin and I were born with a head of hair so we aren't sure which parent the luscious locks are from. People keep saying she has Austin's lips but that is the only thing we can figure out so far.

Have you gotten lots of visitors?

Adelyn is one popular lady. We've been blessed with lots of visits from friends and family. We figured out yesterday that it really helps with people come in waves-meaning we'll have a lot of visitors for an hour or two and then we get a break and so on. It's really fun to see people meet her for the first time.

Speaking of visitors, we have some coming very soon so I'm going to wrap this up. I'm sure there are more updates to come!

Happening Right Now at My House...

Shouldn't I be the one napping? It's not like I'm having a baby in two days or anything...

This Weekend..

Had a great weekend. Kicked it off with a beautiful (and slightly sweaty) wedding on Friday. Here is a picture of the Veritas staff in all their glory.

Austin making me chuckle by trying to compete with my belly.

Probably our last picture together before we become parents!

Today was great. I hit up the pool with two of my besties, Bonnie and Carly. And yes, we are ALL pregnant. Bonnie: 32 weeks. Carly 26 weeks (with twins!) and me 38 weeks. It was almost a comedy routine watching three of us attempt normal pool activities. Luckily it was a private pool so we didn't have anyone weirded out by all the baby bellies.

After making a stop by Central Dairy for ice cream, we returned a little redder and wiped out from the beautiful day in the sun.

I'm just soaking up every moment with friends I can get this week. Glad these girls could be in town!

Question of The Day...

Seriously. I would like to know. Comment and give me some advice!
