Playroom Updates: Toy Organization
In a previous post, I wrote about how we are turning our office into a playroom. Any seasoned mother would know that we are going to need some toy storage. So far, we haven't needed much space for toys. That was until the grandparents had their first Christmas with Adelyn. Needless to say, we need some toy storage. As you can see in the picture below, we have two build-ins in this room.
They were serving as storage for random electronics and serving platters. Probably not stuff that you'd want a curious toddler getting into.

What's also slightly concerning is that the paint inside the cabinets has been peeling away. Probably not good to have random paint chips floating around a playroom either.
This was an easy fix. I picked up some "easy liner" from Lowes and cut out the appropriate shape to fit into the build-in shelf. After I got one shape the size I needed, I just used it as a template for the rest of the shelves. (Notice my little one engrossed in her new toys in the background?)
After all the lining had been placed, the toys were next!
Adelyn was as excited as I was about the new toy organization.

Our Very Merry Christmas
Like every year, Christmas came and went faster than I would like. I've always loved going home for Christmas. I love it even more now that I have a husband and baby to join in on the family festivities. This year was no different. My mom (hostess extraordinaire) does so much planning and preparing to make the holiday so fun and special. And now that she has a grandchild, she is even more eager to make things fun and celebrate.
Every year, there is one elf that didn't make it back to the North Pole. He apparently got squashed by the massive amount of presents under the tree.
We nicknamed our house, "the zoo" because of the ridiculous amount of dogs running around. When all the family is together, there are 7 total. For the most part, they all get along and enjoy the extra land to roam around on. We had to break up one scuffle that happened when they were hungry and being fed in the same area. I guess that happens a lot with humans too though.
Adelyn was little-miss-social for the weekend. She was loving the extra attention and love she was getting from the grandparents. She wasn't too impressed by my brother's handstands though. Guess he'll have to try harder in the future to entertain her.
This is going to sound a bit strange to the outsider, but my brother got me a flying shark for Christmas. He and I have an ongoing playful-bantering relationship that results in odd presents, witty emails, and so on. So, as a joke, he decided to get me a shark filled with helium that swims around the room via remote control. See, told you it sounds weird.
The one complaint I have about the weekend was my little lady's sleeping. I'm guessing she was thrown off by the different environment and as a result, couldn't sleep very well at night. So for four nights, Austin and I tag teamed getting up and down at least twice a night to talk her back from the edge and back into the land of sleep. The second night we were there, my dad heard her crying and thought he'd do us a favor by going in and getting her back to sleep. He found a wide awake grand daughter who was really excited to see him. She sweet talked him into playing together from about 2-3 am. Grandparents are suckers.
Despite her night time wakings, she was in a great mood during the day. When we got back home, the first nap back in her crib was almost 3 hours. I think she was glad to be back in her normal sleeping environment. So are mommy and daddy... haha!
One of the many highlights of the weekend was the visit of a trumpet swan. I did my best to get a few pictures of him even though he was a bit camera shy.
So pretty!
Christmas morning we had our traditional Christmas breakfast consisting of monkey bread, fruit salad, eggs, bacon, sausage, and more. That was followed by opening presents. Lots of presents. My goodness, our family spoils us!
For the most part, Adelyn was more fascinated by the bows and wrapping paper than the actual toy inside the package.
I'm also super pumped because I got a Kindle Fire! I'm still trying to figure out how to set up everything but I am going to have a lot of quality time with this new friend of mine.

Lastly, this is my favorite picture of the weekend. This is my grandpa, Buford. He is 90+ years old (I can't remember his exact age). This picture caught the first moment of meeting Adelyn. He was so delighted that she was smiling at him. What made the moment even more funny was that despite how many times we told him Adelyn was a girl, he kept calling her "he, him, little fella." He also kept referring to her as the "little critter." Too funny.
We're back at home now. Bags unpacked, presents put away. I feel so blessed by my family and I always have period of adjustment after coming back from such great weekends at home. Things seem a little too quiet and I have to readjust to not having 4 others to entertain a 6.5 month old. It's good to be home though. Very good.

Carpet Remnant = Money Saver
This room in our house is currently the multipurpose room.
It primarily serves as an office but will soon be transformed into a playroom. However, a playroom with hardwood floors is not very fun for babies learning to crawl and walk. I looked into getting a rug around 10x12 feet big and was floored by the cost of one. (No pun intended... ok, so maybe it was intended.) Anyway, I wasn't about to shell out $500+ bucks for a rug. No way, Jose.
After gabbing on the phone with my mom about my floor dilemma, she suggested looking into getting a carpet remnant for the spot. Huh- hadn't thought of that.
A few days later, Adelyn and I headed out to Stovers Carpet to check out the stock. I was floored (hehe) by the massive amount of remnants they had available!
After some major hunting, I found one that was 8x10 feet for close to $100.00. Score! There was an additional charge of $40 for binding up the edges so that it wouldn't fray. This was optional but since my little lady wants to put anything and everything in her mouth right now, I didn't think loose carpet pieces would be a good idea.
What's even better is that my parents bought it for us as a Christmas present for Adelyn! Double Score!
So a few days later, this guy showed up at our house. It has cozied up the room so much.
We also installed these gates to 1) keep the dogs off our new rug and 2) to keep the child corralled when she starts moving around.
OK so maybe #1 isn't fully implemented yet.
But we are oh-so-happy with our cozy playroom in the making.
